I actually entered the Military early 1961, when I was just a kid. My Dad was in the Airforce for 31 years.
He retired when I was already in the Army. After Basic and AIT, I was sent to Europe on the "Rose", an old trasnport ship from the WW11. Spent aprox. 4 years in Germany and France. I returned to the place with round door Knobs the USA. I was with the 82nd Airborne and went to Dominican Republic during the Revolution. We were there for 7 months. While in the D.R., I voluntered to go to Viet Nam. I arrived in-country late1965. Wow! What a hot place for Christmas.
My first big experience was the Bob Hope show. What a trip. Upon arrival I was attached to LRRP 17 cav. The guys in my platoon were kind-of crazy. We thought we were the Elite of the 173rd and wanted to stand out, so we all had our heads shaved into a Mohawk haircut. When the Bob Hope Show came we all went early to get front seats, so we could see the pretty Girls. Well low and be hold, The General, you know the big cheeze, he said, "Who in the hell told you troopers to cut their hair that way. Get out of here @#$%$#@get a hair cut the Airborne way." You know, the 3 second dropzone on top. "And don't come back." All I can say now is Merry Christmas General!!!!!!! Air Borne all the way!Aint Army Love grand!
